Explore the Blue Medina

The most important thing to do in Chefchaouen is just to walk in the blue medina. You do not need a map here. It is very nice to walk without knowing where you go, because every street is beautiful and painted blue.
If you want the best photos without many people, you should wake up early in the morning. At 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM, the streets are empty and the light from the sun is very soft. In the middle of the day, there are many tourist groups, so it is harder to take photos. The evening is also nice when the sun goes down and the shadows change the color of the blue walls.
The medina is on a hill, so you will walk up and down many stairs. Take your time, look at the beautiful doors, and say hello to the cats sleeping on the steps.
Visit Plaza Uta el-Hammam
Plaza Uta el-Hammam is the main square in the center of the old city. When you finish walking in the blue streets, you will naturally come to this place.
It is full of big trees, local cafes, and small restaurants. You will see local people sitting and drinking mint tea, and many tourists resting their legs. It is a very good place to sit and watch life happen. You can hear the call to prayer from the big mosque here, and the atmosphere is very calm and warm.
Climb to the Spanish Mosque for Sunset
The Spanish Mosque viewpoint offers the best panoramic sunset view over Chefchaouen’s blue medina and surrounding Rif Mountains.
To get there, you walk out of the medina from the east side, near the river, and walk up a small path on the hill. It takes maybe 30 or 40 minutes of walking. It is not very difficult, but it is going up. The best time to go is one hour before sunset. When you arrive at the white mosque at the top, you can sit on the wall and watch the sun go behind the mountains. The whole blue city turns a little bit golden. It is very safe, because many other tourists and local families go there at the same time.
Discover Ras El Maa Waterfall
Ras El Maa is a small, natural waterfall right outside the medina walls. You can find it easily if you walk towards the east gate.
This is a place where the fresh mountain water comes down into the city. It is very easy to access. You will see local women washing blankets and clothes in the water, which is a very old tradition. It is a very cool place in the hot summer, and there are small cafes where you can put your feet in the water and drink fresh orange juice. It is a good spot for photos.
Take a Day Trip to Akchour Waterfalls
If you like nature, taking a day trip to the Akchour waterfalls is one of the best things you can do.
How to get there: Akchour is about 45 minutes by car from Chefchaouen. You can take a shared grand taxi from the main taxi station in the city. It is very cheap and easy to find.
Hiking duration: When you arrive, there are two main paths. One goes to the big waterfall, and one goes to the God’s Bridge. The walk to the big waterfall takes about 2 hours going there, and 2 hours coming back.
Difficulty level: The hike is medium. It is not very hard, but you need normal walking shoes, not sandals. You will cross the small river many times on small rocks or wood bridges.
God’s Bridge (Pont de Dieu): If you take the other path, you will see God’s Bridge. It is a huge natural rock arch over the river. It is very impressive.
What to bring: Bring a bottle of water, comfortable shoes, and your swimsuit if you visit in summer, because the water is very clean and you can swim.
Visit the Kasbah Museum
Right in the middle of Plaza Uta el-Hammam, you will see big red walls. This is the Kasbah, a very old historic fortress.
You pay a small ticket to go inside. Inside, there is a very beautiful green garden with big trees and flowers. It is very quiet inside, away from the busy square. There is a small museum with old cultural artifacts, clothes, and weapons. The best part is climbing the old tower. From the top of the tower, you get a beautiful view looking down at the square and the blue houses.
Try Local Food in Chefchaouen
The food in the north of Morocco is very tasty. Here are some things you should try.
Fresh goat cheese
Chefchaouen is famous for fresh goat cheese. Local farmers bring it from the mountains. You will see it on small plates for breakfast, and it is very soft and delicious with bread and olive oil.
Tagine
You must try a traditional tagine here. Many places cook it very slowly over charcoal. The meat is very soft and the vegetables are fresh.
Rooftop dining spots
Many small restaurants have a rooftop terrace. You can eat your dinner outside and look at the mountains and the blue city.
Mint tea terraces
If you are not hungry, just find a high terrace and order a pot of Moroccan mint tea. It is sweet and very good for resting after walking a lot.
Go Shopping in the Souks
Chefchaouen’s souks are less aggressive than larger Moroccan cities, making them ideal for relaxed shopping.
The shop owners here are usually very calm. They let you look at things without pushing you to buy. This city is very famous for handwoven blankets and colorful clothes made of wool. You can see the men working on old wooden machines making the blankets. You can also find natural cosmetics, like argan oil and soaps that smell like flowers and herbs.
When you want to buy, you should still bargain a little bit. Always do it with a smile. It is like a friendly game, not an argument.
Hike in the Rif Mountains
If Akchour is too busy for you, there is much more walking in the Rif Mountains.
The city is right next to the Talassemtane National Park. It is a very big protected area with pine trees, monkeys, and beautiful views. You can arrange a local guided hike. A guide is a good idea because the paths are not always marked well.
The difficulty can be easy or very hard, depending on what you want. Spring is the best season for this because everything is green and there are many flowers. Autumn is also very good. Winter can be cold and sometimes there is snow at the top of the mountains.
Relax in a Traditional Hammam
After you walk in the mountains or up and down the medina stairs, your body will be tired. A traditional hammam is perfect for this.
A hammam is a hot steam bath. You can go to a cheap public hammam where local people go. You bring your own towel and soap, and you wash yourself in the hot room. Or, you can book a private hammam in a nice riad or spa. Here, someone will wash you with traditional black soap and scrub your skin so it is very soft. It is a very relaxing local experience.
