4-Day Marrakech to Fes Itinerary

Please look at the detailed programme for each day of the 4 day Marrakech to Fes trip below. We wrote it to help you understand the tour. Remember, this trip is private and it is your holiday. If you see something you do not like or want to change, that is okay. Feel free to contact us and we can change things to make your trip perfect.

Day 1: Marrakech ➔ High Atlas Mountains ➔ Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah ➔ Ouarzazate ➔ Dades Valley

Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Marrakech. (Planning your stay? Read our guide on Riad vs Hotel in Morocco). We embark on a scenic drive across the High Atlas Mountains, navigating the famous Tizi N’Tichka pass. Along the way, we will make frequent stops to admire the sweeping valleys and traditional Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.

Descending southward, we arrive at the spectacular Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. (Looking for a shorter trip? Check out our Day Trip from Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou). This ancient, fortified mud-brick village is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a famous filming location for epic productions like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After exploring the historical alleyways and enjoying lunch, we continue through Ouarzazate (the “Hollywood of Africa”) and the fragrant Valley of Roses. Our day concludes in the Dades Valley, where you will marvel at the unique rock formations known as “monkey fingers” before settling into your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Dades Valley ➔ Tinghir Oasis ➔ Todra Gorge ➔ Merzouga Desert

Following breakfast, we depart the Dades Valley and head toward the Tinghir Oasis. Our first major stop is the magnificent Todra Gorge, a massive fault dividing the High Atlas Mountains. Enjoy a refreshing walk through the canyon, feeling the cool breeze between the towering rock walls.

Continuing our drive past lush palm groves and quaint villages, we approach the gateway to the Sahara. Before reaching the iconic Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, we may stop to purchase traditional Berber scarves—an essential item for desert exploration. (Read our full guide on What to pack for a Morocco Sahara Desert Tour).

Upon arriving in Merzouga in the late afternoon, your camel caravan awaits. Embark on a peaceful camel ride through the sweeping dunes as you watch the spectacular desert sunset. You will arrive at your desert camp in the evening, where you’ll be treated to a traditional Moroccan dinner, enchanting Berber drum music, and a night’s rest under a canopy of stars.

Day 3: Deep Sahara Exploration in Merzouga (4x4 Tour)

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking Saharan sunrise painting the dunes in vibrant colors. After a hearty breakfast at the camp, we set out in a 4×4 vehicle for a deep exploration of the region. (Discover more Things to do in Merzouga).

We will venture off-road to visit nomadic Berber families living in traditional tents, gaining insight into their fascinating, time-honored way of life. Next, we visit the village of Khamlia to experience the rhythmic and spiritual Gnaoua music, a profound cultural treasure of African origin. We will also explore the deserted mining village of Mefis and, depending on recent rainfall, the seasonal Lake of Birds.

Following lunch, we head to your Riad in Merzouga. Enjoy a free afternoon to relax by the pool or take a quiet walk near the dunes. (Note: If you prefer to spend this second night back at the desert camp instead of a Riad, simply let us know during booking!)

Day 4: Merzouga ➔ Ziz Valley ➔ Ifrane ➔ Fes

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the desert and begin our journey north. The landscape transforms dramatically as we drive through the lush Ziz Valley, stopping to admire panoramic views of thousands of date palms dotting the oasis.

We continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping for lunch in the town of Midelt. As we enter the ancient cedar forests near Azrou, keep your eyes peeled for the friendly, wild Barbary macaques swinging through the trees.

Before arriving in Fes, we make a brief stop in Ifrane, beautifully designed with alpine-style architecture and affectionately known as the “Switzerland of Morocco.” We reach Fes in the late afternoon, where your driver will drop you off at your accommodation, bringing your incredible 4-day adventure to a close. Know Before You Go (Important Tips)

  • If you have any food allergy or you cannot eat certain foods, please tell us when you book. It is very important. We want your trip to be safe and nice, so we will tell the hotels and the camp about your needs before you arrive.
  • The weather changes a lot on this trip, you will see. In the mountains, it can be cold, especially in the morning or evening. In the desert, it is very hot during the day. Please remember to bring different clothes for both hot and cold weather.
  • It is a good idea to bring a small day bag for the camel ride to the camp. You only take what you need for one night in the desert. The big luggage stays safe in the car with the driver until the next day. This makes the camel ride easier for you.
  • For lunch every day, your driver will suggest good, clean restaurants where you can eat. You can choose where to stop. If you have a special restaurant idea, just tell the driver.
  • The desert camp has private bathrooms and good beds, it is not like hard camping. It is a very good and comfortable experience. But if you are sensitive to heat or noise, please tell us.
  • We give you the choice to spend two night sat a hotel/Riad and one night at the camp in the desert area. But if you want to spend both Merzouga nights in the desert camp, you can do this. Just let us know when you book your tour.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Absolutely. While 3-day tours are available, a 4-day itinerary is the optimal duration. It significantly reduces daily driving time, allowing for a much more relaxed pace and an entire day dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert and its surrounding nomadic culture.

The ideal time to visit the Sahara is between September and May. The days are pleasantly warm, and the nights are comfortably cool. Summer months (July and August) can be extremely hot, while winter months (December to February) offer beautiful sunny days but chilly nights requiring a warm jacket. The camel ride is about 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes in the afternoon. This is to get you into the camp and see the beautiful sunset. In the morning, you ride the camel back to the car, it is a similar time. If you do not want to ride the camel, you can use the 4×4 car to go to and from the desert camp, that is fine.

Yes, they do. The luxury camps we use are very comfortable. You will have your own private tent, not a shared one. Each tent has a proper bed and its own bathroom inside, with a flush toilet and a hot shower. So you can be clean and comfortable in the desert, no worries.

The roads are good, but we have some long driving days. The longest drive is the last day from Merzouga to Fes, that takes about 7 hours of driving time. The other days are shorter, about 5 to 6 hours driving. But we stop many, many times for photos, lunch, coffee, and sights. Your car is an air-conditioned 4×4, so it is a good car and we make sure you are comfortable.
