Best Time to Visit Morocco (Month-by-Month Local Guide for 2026)

When I wake up early in the morning, I like to drink my hot mint tea and look at the sky. Sometimes I feel the cold wind coming from the snow on the Atlas Mountains. Other times, I feel the warm air from the Sahara desert. I am a local guide here in Morocco, and I show my beautiful country to many people from all over the world.

Every time I talk to people who want to visit, they always ask me the same question. They ask, “When is the best time to visit Morocco?”

I always smile and tell them that there is no one best time. It really depends on what you want to do and what you want to see. If you want to sleep under the stars in the desert, the best time is different than if you want to swim in the sea. If you like to walk in the mountains, it is different than if you want to buy things in the old markets.

In this guide, I will help you understand everything so you can choose the best time for your trip. I will tell you about our weather, the different regions, our local festivals, the prices of hotels, and when there are too many tourists. Let me explain it all to you simply, step by step.

Best Time to Visit Morocco

Quick Answer – When Is the Best Time to Visit Morocco?

If you want a fast answer, I will tell you the best overall months to come to Morocco are April to May, and September to October.

These months are very good because we call this the shoulder season. The weather is very nice. It is not too hot like the summer, and it is not cold like the winter. You can do almost everything during these months. You can visit the desert, walk in the cities, and see the mountains in good weather.

Here is a quick summary to help you:

  • Best for weather: April, May, September, and October.
  • Best for desert: November, December, January, and February (it is cold but very clear).
  • Best for beaches: July and August (the water is very warm).
  • Cheapest months: January and February (hotels give good prices).
  • Avoid if sensitive to heat: July and August (it is very hot, especially in cities like Marrakech).

Morocco Climate Explained (Why Timing Matters Here)

Morocco is a big country. We have many different places, and the weather is not the same everywhere. You can be in the snow in the morning and in the hot desert in the afternoon. This is why you need to know the regions before you plan your trip.

Coastal Morocco (Casablanca, Essaouira, Tangier)

Next to the ocean, the weather is nice all year. The water makes the air cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If you go to Essaouira in July, it is maybe 25 degrees Celsius and very pleasant. You will need a light jacket in the evening because of the wind.

Imperial Cities (Marrakech, Fes, Rabat, Meknes)

These are the old cities. I live in Meknes, and I know the weather here very well. In the summer, from June to August, these cities get very hot. Sometimes it is 40 degrees Celsius in Marrakech. But in the spring and autumn, the weather is perfect for walking in the old medinas.

Sahara Desert (Merzouga, Zagora)

The desert is a special place. In the winter, it feels magical. The sun is warm in the day, but at night it gets very cold. You need heavy clothes to sleep. In the summer, the desert is too hot. It is not safe to do long tours there in July.

Atlas Mountains

The mountains change with how high you go. If you go high in the winter, there is a lot of snow. The roads can close. In the spring and summer, the snow melts and the mountains are green and beautiful for walking.

Here is a simple table to compare the weather. This will help you plan:

Best Time to Visit Morocco by Season

I will now tell you about each season. I have done tours in all these seasons, so I know how it feels for travelers.

Spring (March–May) – The Perfect Balance

Spring is maybe the most beautiful time in Morocco. After the winter rain, everything becomes green. If you travel outside the cities, you will see many green valleys and small colorful flowers everywhere. It makes me very happy to see my country look like this.

During spring, you can still see the white snow on the top of the Atlas Mountains, but the weather where you walk is warm and nice. This makes it a very good time if you like to take photos. The contrast between the green grass, the red earth, and the white snow is very beautiful.

This is an ideal time for walking and hiking. You can walk for many hours without feeling too tired from the heat. In the cities like Fes and Marrakech, the weather is warm during the day, maybe 20 to 25 degrees. You can sit outside and drink coffee or tea.

If you want to go to the Sahara desert in the spring, it is also a good choice. The days are warm but not dangerous, and the nights are comfortable. You don’t need very heavy winter clothes to sleep in the desert camp. But you should know that spring is a popular time. Many people come to visit, so the hotels can be full and the prices are a little higher. You need to book your rooms early.

Summer (June–August) – Hot but Great for Coast

Summer in Morocco is hot. Very hot. If you want to visit Marrakech or Fes in July or August, you must be prepared for the heat. In the middle of the day, it can be 40 degrees Celsius or more. Local people stay inside during the afternoon and we only go out in the early morning or late evening. If you come now, you must book a hotel with a swimming pool and good air conditioning.

But summer is not bad everywhere. It is the best time if you want to visit the coastal cities. Places like Tangier, Asilah, Rabat, and Essaouira have very nice weather in the summer. The ocean wind keeps the air cool. Essaouira is very famous in the summer because the wind is strong and it is perfect for surfing and windsurfing.

Many European tourists have their holidays in July and August, so the beaches get very busy. You will see many families enjoying the sea. If you like a quiet trip, the beach in summer is maybe too crowded for you. But if you like to see people and enjoy the water, it is very good.

I always tell my guests: do not go to the Sahara desert in the summer. It is too hot to ride camels, and the sand can burn your feet. Also, sometimes there are strong sandstorms in the summer. It is better to stay near the water.

Autumn (September–November) – My Personal Favorite

If you ask me my personal favorite time, I will say autumn. September, October, and November are very special months here. The very hot summer ends, and the air becomes fresh again.

In autumn, the sea water is still very warm from the summer sun. You can still swim in September and October, but the beaches have fewer tourists. It is much more quiet and relaxing. The weather in the imperial cities is very comfortable, just like in the spring.

This is a great time for desert conditions. The sand is not too hot in the day, and the sky is very clear at night. Because the air is dry and clear, the stars in the desert look very bright. It is beautiful to sit by the fire in the camp.

Autumn is also the harvest season in Morocco. This is the time when farmers collect dates in the south and olives in the north. If you drive in the countryside, you will see families working together under the trees. You can buy very fresh dates in the markets during this time. The food feels very fresh and connected to the earth.

Also, in late November, the prices for hotels start to go down because winter is coming. So you can get good weather and better prices.

Winter (December–February) – Snow & Sahara Magic

Many people think Morocco is always hot. They are surprised when I tell them about winter. Winter here can be cold, especially in the north and in the mountains.

If you go to a town called Ifrane in the Middle Atlas mountains, it looks like Europe. There are houses with sloping roofs, and there is a lot of snow. Moroccan people go there to ski and play in the snow. It is a very different experience of Morocco.

Winter is a magic time for the Sahara desert. Yes, the nights are very cold. You will need a thick jacket, a warm hat, and maybe gloves for the night and early morning. But the days are sunny and clear. And because there is no heat haze in the air, you can see very far. The desert camps give you many heavy blankets, so you will be warm when you sleep.

One very good thing about winter is the prices. Because fewer tourists come (except for the Christmas and New Year weeks), the hotels and tours give lower prices. You can stay in very nice riads for less money. Also, the markets and museums are not crowded. You can walk slowly and talk to the shop owners easily.

Just remember that the days are shorter in winter. The sun goes down early, around 5:30 or 6:00 PM. So you need to start your tours early in the morning to see everything.

Best Time to Visit Morocco for Specific Experiences

Sometimes you come to Morocco for one special reason. Here is my advice for specific things you want to do.

Best Time for the Sahara Desert

The desert is beautiful, but you must respect the weather. The best time to go is from October to April. During these months, the sun is not dangerous and you can ride camels safely. The winter months (December to February) have the best clear sky for seeing stars, but you need warm clothes. Never go in July or August.

Best Time for Marrakech

Marrakech has no ocean to cool the air. The best time to visit the red city is April, May, September, and October. The weather is warm enough to swim in your hotel pool, but cool enough to walk in the big market (the Medina) without sweating too much.

Best Time for Surfing

Morocco has great waves. If you want to surf, the best time is the winter months, from October to March. The waves are bigger and better then. If you are a beginner, the summer months (June to August) have smaller, easier waves in places like Taghazout and Essaouira.

Best Time for Hiking the Atlas

If you want to walk in the mountains or climb Mount Toubkal, come in the spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). The snow is gone from the walking paths, the days are long, and the temperature is very comfortable for physical work.

Best Time for Festivals

If you like music and culture, early summer is good. June usually has big music festivals. But you must check the calendar every year because Islamic holidays change dates. I will talk more about festivals in the next section.

Cheapest Time to Visit Morocco

If you want to save money, come in January, February, or late November. Because there are fewer people, hotels give very good discounts. Also, you can buy things in the market for cheaper prices because the shop owners have more time to talk and bargain with you.

Morocco Festivals & Cultural Events (Plan Around These)

When you plan your trip, you must know about our local events. They can change your experience.

Ramadan impact on travel

Ramadan is our holy month of fasting. The date changes every year because we use the moon calendar. For example, this year in 2026, Ramadan started in the middle of February (around February 18 or 19) and will finish in the middle of March. Actually, we are in Ramadan right now!

Is it a bad time to visit? No, but it is different. During the day, many cafes and restaurants are closed because Muslims do not eat or drink until sunset. Things move slower. But when the sun goes down, the streets become very busy and happy. People eat a special meal called Iftar. It is a very cultural time. If you come, just be patient in the day and enjoy the food at night.

Fes Festival of World Sacred Music

This is a very famous festival in Fes, usually in June. Musicians from all over the world come to play beautiful music in old palaces. If you want to go, you must book your hotel many months before because the city gets completely full.

Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira

This happens in early summer, usually June. Gnaoua is a special type of spiritual music. Thousands of young people go to Essaouira for this. It is very crowded but very fun. Prices for hotels in Essaouira go up very high during this weekend.

Rose Festival in Kalaat M’Gouna

In the Valley of Roses, they pick millions of pink roses in late April or early May. They have a festival to celebrate. It smells beautiful, and you can buy rose water and soap. It is a very nice local experience.

Imilchil Marriage Festival

This is a very old tradition in the mountains, usually in September. Different tribes meet and young people find husbands and wives. It is very traditional and colorful, but it is far in the mountains so you need a good guide to take you there.

When NOT to Visit Morocco (Honest Advice)

Because I am your guide, I must be honest with you. There are some times you should try to avoid.

First, do not do a Sahara desert tour in July or August. Some companies will still sell you the tour, but I tell you it is a bad idea. It can be 45 degrees Celsius. The tents get very hot and you will not sleep. Also, in the summer we sometimes get strong sandstorms called “Chergui” which make the sky yellow and it is hard to breathe.

Second, be careful about the Eid holidays. There are two big Eid holidays (Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha). During these 2 or 3 days, almost everything is closed. Shops, restaurants, and museums shut their doors because everyone stays home with their families. Transport is also very full before the holiday. If you are here during Eid, plan to stay in your hotel and eat there.

Finally, if you don’t like big crowds and loud noise, try not to visit the beach cities in August. This is when all Moroccan families and many Europeans take their holiday. The beaches are completely full, the roads have traffic, and everything is expensive.

Final Verdict – So, When Should You Visit Morocco?

To finish our guide, I will say again that Spring (April, May) and Autumn (September, October) are the safest choices for a perfect trip. The weather is kind to you, and the country looks beautiful.

But I want you to customize your trip:

  • Couples: Come in October. The weather is warm, the desert is romantic, and it is very nice for dinners outside.
  • Families: April is great for children. It is not too hot so they don’t get tired fast.
  • Adventure travelers: Come in winter to surf in the south or hike in the cold mountains.
  • Budget travelers: January and February are your best friends. You save a lot of money.
  • Photographers: Spring is the best because the air is clear and the earth is green with snowy mountains.

If you come to my country, we will welcome you with open arms and hot tea. Morocco is beautiful in every month, you just need to know what to expect.
