Detailed Itinerary

We have designed a well-paced itinerary for your Sahara adventure. If you wish to customize any part of this trip, please let us know—we are happy to tailor the experience to your exact preferences!

Day 1: Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Ait Benhaddou - Merzouga

We begin early, picking you up directly from your Marrakech accommodation to start the scenic drive south. Our first major highlight is crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi N’Tichka pass. We will make several stops so you can photograph the breathtaking panoramic views.

Next, we visit the iconic Ait Benhaddou Kasbah. This ancient, fortified village is a renowned UNESCO site and the backdrop for numerous Hollywood blockbusters. After exploring its historic alleyways, we will stop for a local lunch.

We then continue our drive, reaching the edge of the Sahara Desert by evening. (Note: This is a long driving day of approximately 9 hours, but the journey takes you straight to Merzouga so you can enjoy a full, relaxing day in the dunes tomorrow.) Upon arrival, check into your comfortable hotel or riad for a warm dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert Exploration & Nomad Villages

Wake up early to catch a spectacular desert sunrise straight from your riad. After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a thrilling 4×4 off-road adventure around the massive Erg Chebbi dunes, which is just one of the many incredible things to do in Merzouga.

We will visit local Nomad families living in traditional woven tents, offering a rare glimpse into their daily lives over a shared glass of mint tea. Our exploration continues to Khamlia village, famous for its mesmerizing Gnawa music. Enjoy the rhythmic cultural performance before stopping for a local lunch nearby.

In the late afternoon, the real magic begins. You will meet your camel caravan for a peaceful trek into the heart of the dunes. After watching the sunset paint the sand in vibrant colors, you will arrive at your cozy desert camp. Enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner, listen to traditional drum music around the campfire, and sleep under a brilliantly starry sky.

Day 3: Merzouga - Draa Valley - Ouarzazate - Marrakech

Rise early for one last, stunning Sahara sunrise. After capturing beautiful photos, ride your camel back to the edge of the dunes to meet your driver. We will enjoy breakfast at the riad before beginning our journey back to Marrakech.

Today’s route takes us along a different path, through the magnificent Draa Valley—a massive oasis lined with date palms. We will stop near the town of Agdz for panoramic views of this lush green expanse.

We will then pause for lunch in Ouarzazate, affectionately known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” for its massive film studios. Finally, we cross the High Atlas Mountains one last time, arriving back in Marrakech by early evening. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, concluding your unforgettable Moroccan adventure.

Know Before You Go: Essential Travel Tips

Preparing for the Sahara Desert requires a bit of planning. Below is everything you need to know about the driving distances, what to pack, and what to expect during your 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga adventure.

The Driving Reality: Distances & Times

Traveling from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga is an incredible road trip, but it is a vast distance. Our unique itinerary takes you straight to the desert on Day 1 so you can enjoy a full, unhurried day in the dunes on Day 2.

Route LegDistanceApprox. Driving Time
Day 1: Marrakech to Merzouga560 km (348 miles)9 – 10 hours
Day 2: Desert ExplorationLocalized2 – 3 hours (Off-road 4×4)
Day 3: Merzouga to Marrakech560 km (348 miles)9 – 10 hours

Note: The 9 to 10 hours of driving on Days 1 and 3 are broken up with frequent stops for panoramic photos, visiting historical sites like Ait Benhaddou, and enjoying local meals. Our private vehicles are comfortable, but we highly recommend bringing motion-sickness tablets if you are sensitive to winding mountain roads in the High Atlas.

What to Pack for the Sahara

You will not need your large suitcase in the desert camp. Your driver will safely lock your main luggage in the vehicle, so you only need to pack a small overnight bag or backpack for the camel trek. Read our complete guide on what to pack for a Morocco Sahara desert tour for a full checklist.

  • Clothing: Dress in comfortable layers. Pack loose, breathable clothing for the daytime and closed-toe shoes for walking in the sand.
  • Warm Layers (Crucial): Desert temperatures drop significantly at night. If traveling between November and March, bring a heavy jacket, warm socks, and a beanie.
  • Sun Protection: The Moroccan sun is intense. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and SPF 50+ sunscreen. You can also buy a traditional Berber scarf along the route to protect your face from wind and sand.
  • Tech & Comfort: Bring a high-capacity power bank (electricity in the desert camps relies on solar power and can be limited). Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and a reusable water bottle are also highly recommended.

Weather & The Best Time to Visit

The Sahara is a destination of extremes. While you can review our full guide on the best time to visit Morocco, here is what to expect depending on when you book your tour:

Spring (March to May) & Autumn (September to November): This is the peak season. The weather is perfect—warm, sunny days (20°C to 25°C) and comfortably cool nights.

Winter (December to February): Days are beautifully clear and mild, but nighttime temperatures can drop close to freezing (0°C to 5°C). Our camps provide heavy blankets, but warm sleepwear is a must.

Summer (June to August): Daytime temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F). Our vehicles are fully air-conditioned, and desert activities are scheduled for the cooler early morning and late evening hours.

Camel Trekking & Camp Logistics

Can I skip the camel ride? Absolutely. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can transport you directly to the desert camp via a 4×4 vehicle at no extra cost.

Bathrooms: If you book the Luxury Tour Pack, your desert tent will have a private, en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and flushing toilet. Standard Tour Packs utilize clean, shared bathroom facilities located within the camp.

Connectivity: While you will have a 4G mobile signal for most of the drive, expect limited to no cell service or Wi-Fi deep in the Erg Chebbi dunes. It is the perfect opportunity to unplug and enjoy the stars.

Money & Tipping

While your accommodation, transport, and most meals are covered, you will need Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) for daily lunches, drinks, and souvenirs. Learn more about paying in Morocco and local currency tips.

  • ATMs: Withdraw cash in Marrakech before we depart. ATMs are scarce once we enter the desert regions.
  • Tipping: Tipping your driver/guide, camel handler, and camp staff is customary in Morocco but completely optional. A general guideline is 100-200 MAD per day for a driver who provides excellent service.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Yes, the private nature of this tour makes it very adaptable. We can provide child seats upon request and adjust the pace with frequent stops. For travelers who cannot or prefer not to ride camels, we provide a comfortable 4×4 transfer directly to the desert camp. However, please keep in mind that Days 1 and 3 involve significant driving (approx. 9 hours), which may be tiring for very young children or those with mobility issues.

Absolutely. Moroccan cuisine is highly adaptable. We can easily cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-specific diets. Please inform us of your dietary requirements when booking, and we will ensure the hotels, the desert camp, and the restaurants we stop at along the way are fully prepared for you.

You will not need to take your heavy suitcases on the camel. Your main luggage will be securely locked in our vehicle with your driver. You will only need to pack a small daypack with your overnight essentials (pajamas, toothbrush, power bank, and a change of clothes) for your night in the desert camp.

No. We believe in complete transparency. Your accommodation, private transport, breakfasts, dinners, and desert activities (camel trek/4×4) are fully included. The only out-of-pocket expenses you will have are your daily lunches, drinks, souvenirs, and optional tips. We do not force our guests into high-pressure shopping stops.

To secure your tour, we require a small deposit at the time of booking. The remaining balance can be paid directly to your driver upon arrival in Morocco. If you need to cancel or modify your dates, please contact us at least 48 hours in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate your changes or refund your deposit according to our flexible cancellation terms.

Yes, our desert camps are equipped with solar power. You will have lighting in your tent, and there are charging outlets available in the main restaurant tent to charge your phones and camera batteries during the evening. However, because it is solar-powered, we still highly recommend bringing a fully charged power bank as a backup.
