K.J.KVerified Trip to never forget Me and my partner did a 4 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back. During the trip, we passed through the Atlas Mountains and stopped at Ait Ben Haddou, which was interesting to see. The drives were long but broken up with stops, so it never felt too tiring. We spent one night in a desert camp in Merzouga. The camp was comfortable, the food was good, and in the evening there was Berber music around the fire. We also enjoyed the camel ride and watching the sunset over the dunes. On the way back, we stopped in Ouarzazate and a few small villages. Overall, it was a well-organized trip and a good way to experience different parts of Morocco. Michelle IVerified Fue la mejor experiencia! La cena fue deliciosa y la velada con mĆŗsica tradicional alrededor del fuego fue perfecta para relajarnos y disfrutar del ambiente del desierto. 6 Days Desert Tour From Marrakech Itinerary
Please look at the detailed plan for each day below. Remember, this is your holiday. If there is something you do not like or want to change, just tell us. You can contact us before or during the tour, so we can make the perfect travel plan for you. We are very flexible.
DAY 1: Marrakech ⢠High Atlas Mountains ⢠Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah ⢠Dades Valley
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your Marrakech hotel. We journey east, ascending the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping to photograph the panoramic views and traditional Berber villages. Descending the mountains, we explore the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, an ancient fortified village famous for its appearance in movies like Gladiator. We then drive through Ouarzazate and the fragrant Valley of Roses before settling into a guesthouse in the Dades Valley for dinner and an overnight stay.
DAY 2: DADES VALLEY ⢠TODRA GORGE ⢠MERZOUGA DESERT
We start by admiring the unique “monkey fingers” rock formations in the Dades Gorge. Continuing our journey, we reach the Todra Gorge, a massive fault dividing the High Atlas mountains, with vertical cliffs rising 300 meters. After a short walk along the river, we head toward the Sahara, passing through Erfoud and Rissani. Upon arriving in Merzouga, you will embark on a sunset camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes to your desert camp. Enjoy a traditional dinner, Berber fireside music, and sleep under a vast, starry sky.
DAY 3: A FULL DAY IN THE DESERT EXPLORING THE AREA
Today is dedicated to discovering the Merzouga region. After an optional early wake-up for a spectacular desert sunrise and breakfast, we utilize a 4×4 vehicle to explore off-the-beaten-path locations. We will visit nomadic desert families to share mint tea and learn about their lifestyle. Next, we visit Khamlia village to experience rhythmic Gnawa music. The afternoon is yours to relax, hike the dunes, or try sandboarding. We spend a second night in the area at a desert camp or a local Riad.
DAY 4: Merzouga ⢠Rissani ⢠Agdez ⢠Ouarzazate
After the desert sunrise and a good breakfast, we say goodbye to the dunes. We drive back towards Ouarzazate, but we take a different route today. Our first stop is Rissani, this town is important because it has a big, very traditional souk, or market. If it is a market day, we will walk around and see how local people buy and sell everything from spices to dates, it is a good experience to see the local life.
We continue driving through a very dry landscape until we reach the Draa Valley. This is a beautiful green area, like a long ribbon of life in the desert. It is full of palm trees, millions of them. The view is amazing, a big contrast to the sand dunes. We stop at Agdez, a nice old town in the valley, for a break and to enjoy the panoramic view of the palm groves and the old Kasbahs.
The day ends when we arrive in Ouarzazate. We check into our hotel here. Ouarzazate is the big center of the region. If we have time, you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah or the famous movie studios where they filmed many big movies. We have dinner and get ready for the last day of driving back to Marrakech.
DAY 5: OUARZAZATE ⢠AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH ⢠TELOUET KASBAH ⢠MARRAKECH
Today, we leave Ouarzazate and drive back towards the Atlas Mountains and Marrakech. We will stop again at Ait Ben Haddou. It is so beautiful, so it is nice to see it another time or from a different angle on the road. We continue our journey to the hidden jewel of Telouet.
Telouet Kasbah is a very important historical place, a stunning old Kasbah that was once the seat of the powerful Glaoui family, who ruled the area. Part of it is ruined, but the inner rooms are still very decorated with colorful tiles and carved wood. It is a little bit hard to get there but very worth the visit. You can see the richness and the history of Morocco here.
After Telouet, we cross the Atlas Mountains again, taking the same beautiful road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. We stop for lunch and then continue our drive down to Marrakech. The view changes as we come closer to the city, from the mountain colors to the famous red city. We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon. Our driver will drop you off at your Riad or hotel. You will have time to relax and maybe enjoy the Jemaa el-Fna square in the evening.
DAY 6: A FULL DAY TRIP EXPLORING MARRAKECH CITY
On your last day, we take a full day to show you the best of Marrakech, the Red City. This full day trip is a nice end to your desert adventure. We will walk through the small, winding streets of the old Medina, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will see the famous Koutoubia Mosque, which has a very tall minaret.
We will visit the beautiful palaces, like the Bahia Palace, to see the amazing architecture and colorful tiles. You will explore the busy souks, or markets, where you can find many things: spices, leather, carpets, and traditional clothes. It is a bit chaotic, but very exciting and fun. Remember to bargain politely for the things you want to buy.
In the afternoon, we can visit the quiet and lovely Majorelle Garden, with its special blue color and exotic plants. Finally, we go to the famous Jemaa el-Fna square. It is very special, especially in the evening when it is full of storytellers, food stalls, and music. This full day of exploration ends your 6 Days Desert Tour From Marrakech with a perfect memory of the city.

Know Before You Go:
- Tell us about allergies: If you or anyone in your group has any food allergy, please tell us when you book. It is very important so we can tell the hotels and the desert camp staff. We want you to eat safely and enjoy the good food.
- What to wear: The weather changes a lot on this trip. It can be very hot during the day, so bring light clothes, but the nights in the desert and the mountains are cold. Bring a warm jacket, especially for the desert camp night.
- Be polite when taking photos: Moroccan people are generally happy but always ask for permission before you take a photo of a person, especially women. A simple hand gesture or “S’il vous plaĆ®t” is good.
Local money: You will need cash for things like lunch, water, and entrance tickets. You can use credit cards in big cities, but in the small villages and markets, you need Moroccan Dirhams. - Water and sun: It is very important to drink a lot of water every day to stay healthy, especially in the dry heat. Always use sunscreen and wear a hat or a scarf for sun protection, the desert sun is very strong.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Yes, the camel ride is safe. The camels are well-trained and you will have a guide with you for the whole time. If you have trouble getting on or off, the guides will help you.
In the cities and most of the guesthouses you will have Wi-Fi. But when we are driving in the Atlas Mountains and deep in the desert, the phone signal will not be there, or it will be very weak. It is a good time to enjoy the view and unplug.
Yes, because this is a private tour, you can ask the driver to stop for photos when you see something interesting. The driver is very flexible. However, for safety reasons, we cannot stop on the Tizi n’Tichka pass, but there are dedicated stops near it.
You will eat traditional and very good Moroccan food, like Tajine and Couscous, which are cooked slowly with meat or vegetables and spices. Breakfasts will be simple with bread, jam, honey, and tea.
The camp is comfortable. You sleep in a private tent, not a shared one. The tents have real beds and linens. There are shared or private bathrooms, depending on the camp type you choose (standard or luxury). It is a good mix of traditional feeling and comfort.
Some days have many hours of driving, yes, but we always stop often for breaks, photos, lunch, or to visit a place. This helps to make the journey easy and comfortable, and the changing scenery makes the time pass very fast.
