K.J.KVerified Trip to never forget Me and my partner did a 4 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back. During the trip, we passed through the Atlas Mountains and stopped at Ait Ben Haddou, which was interesting to see. The drives were long but broken up with stops, so it never felt too tiring. We spent one night in a desert camp in Merzouga. The camp was comfortable, the food was good, and in the evening there was Berber music around the fire. We also enjoyed the camel ride and watching the sunset over the dunes. On the way back, we stopped in Ouarzazate and a few small villages. Overall, it was a well-organized trip and a good way to experience different parts of Morocco. 5 Days Desert Tour From Marrakech To Merzouga Itinerary:
Please look here at the detailed programme for each day of your 5-day desert tour. Remember this is your trip. If there is something you do not like or want to change, just tell us. Feel free to contact us and we can change the programme easy for you.
Day 1: Marrakech ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Dades Valley
We begin our journey by picking you up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech. We immediately head south, ascending the winding roads of the High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m). We will make several stops to photograph the sweeping panoramic views and the traditional Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.
By midday, we arrive at the spectacular Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This ancient, fortified village is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has served as a backdrop for epic films like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. After exploring the kasbah and enjoying a local lunch, we continue through Ouarzazate and the fragrant Valley of the Roses. We end the day traveling along the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” into the Dades Valley, where you will spend the night in a comfortable hotel overlooking the gorge and its unique “Monkey Fingers” rock formations.
Day 2: Dades Valley ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Merzouga Desert
After breakfast, we depart the Dades Valley and drive toward Tinghir to visit the magnificent Todra Gorge. Here, the river has carved a massive canyon through the limestone, leaving vertical cliffs that rise 300 meters on either side. We will take time for a short walk along the cool riverbed.
Following lunch, our route takes us past ancient palm groves and into the increasingly arid landscapes approaching the Sahara. Upon arriving in Merzouga, your caravan awaits. You will leave the vehicle behind and ride camels for roughly an hour into the stunning Erg Chebbi dunes. We will pause at the top of a high dune to watch the sunset over the sand before arriving at your desert camp. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, listen to live Berber drumming around the fire, and sleep in a private tent beneath a canopy of stars.
(Note: Wondering what to pack for the Sahara? We recommend layers, as the desert cools down significantly at night.)
Day 3: Full Day Exploring the Sahara and Nomad Culture
Today is dedicated to discovering the rich culture and environment of the Sahara. We highly recommend waking up early to witness a spectacular desert sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast at the camp, we will set out in a 4×4 to explore the surrounding area.
We will visit local nomadic families who still live in traditional tents, sharing a cup of mint tea and learning about their resilient way of life. Our off-road exploration will also take us to the village of Khamlia, home to people originally from sub-Saharan Africa, where you will experience an immersive performance of spiritual Gnawa music. The afternoon is yours to relax at a hotel near the dune line, swim in a pool, or explore the sands on foot before spending a second night at the desert camp.
Day 4: Merzouga ⇢ Rissani ⇢ Agdez ⇢ Ouarzazate
After breakfast, we bid farewell to the dunes and travel to the historic town of Rissani. Once a major hub for trans-Saharan trade caravans, Rissani boasts a vibrant traditional souk. If we arrive on a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday), we will wander through the stalls selling spices, dates, and local crafts.
Continuing our journey, we pass through Erfoud, a town famous for its fossilized marble workshops. We then follow the path of the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river, bordered by millions of date palms and crumbling mud-brick kasbahs. We will stop at the panoramic viewpoint of Agdez before arriving in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. You will check into your hotel, enjoy dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 5: Ouarzazate ⇢ Telouet Kasbah ⇢ Marrakech
On our final day, you have the option to visit the Taourirt Kasbah, a former palace of the powerful Glaoui family, or tour the Atlas Film Studios where many blockbuster movies were shot.
We then begin our ascent back into the High Atlas Mountains. Our route takes us off the main highway to visit the stunning Kasbah of Telouet. Once a center of immense wealth along the salt trade routes, this partially ruined palace still features incredible zellige tilework and intricate cedar carvings. After exploring Telouet, we cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass one last time, arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon. We will drop you off at your accommodation, concluding your 5-day desert adventure.
