DAY 1: Marrakech - High Atlas Mountains - Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah - Ouarzazate - Dades Valley

We will pick you up from your hotel or Riad in Marrakech around 8:00 AM. Our journey starts by driving up the High Atlas Mountains. We will cross the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, which is over 2,260 meters high. The drive offers great views of the valleys and traditional Berber villages built into the mountainside. We will stop for photos to see the beautiful nature.

Our first important stop is the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah. This old, fortified village is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a very important place in Moroccan history. You will walk around this unique Kasbah, which has been the location for many famous movies. After the visit and lunch, we drive to Ouarzazate. This city is famous for its film studios, and we will take a quick look around.

From Ouarzazate, we will continue our drive to the Dades Valley. On the way, we pass through the Valley of Roses, which is especially beautiful in spring. We will arrive at our hotel in the Dades Valley in the evening. You can relax, eat a tasty Moroccan dinner, and rest for the night.

DAY2: Dades Valley - Tinghir Oasis - Todgha Canyon - Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, we leave Dades Valley and travel towards the Sahara Desert. Our first stop is Tinghir. Here, you will see a huge, green oasis with many palm trees and old mud houses (Kasbahs). We will take a short, relaxing walk through this peaceful palm grove. This shows you the rich agriculture that exists next to the dry land.

Next, we drive to the dramatic Todgha Canyon. Here, you can stand between giant rock walls that rise up very high. The Todgha River cut this deep, narrow valley. It is a perfect place for walking and taking photos of the grand nature. We will have lunch on the way before continuing our drive to Merzouga.

When we arrive in Merzouga, your luggage will go to the camp by car. You will then meet your camels! The best part of the day starts now. You will ride your camel for about an hour into the dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun sets. When you reach the camp, you will have a traditional dinner and listen to local music around the fire. Then, you will sleep in a comfortable tent under a sky full of bright stars.

DAY 3: Merzouga Desert - Ziz Valley - Middle Atlas Mountains - Ifran - Fes

You should wake up early to see the wonderful sunrise over the Sahara dunes. This is a quiet and beautiful moment you will always remember. After a good breakfast at the camp, you will ride the camels back to Merzouga town, or you can take a 4×4 car. We will start our long drive to the final city, Fes.

Our drive takes us through the spectacular Ziz Valley. This area has huge palm groves, which look amazing next to the dry mountains. We will stop at a viewpoint to take pictures of this large green river valley. The trip continues into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here, the weather changes, and we enter the green cedar forests. We will stop to see the famous Barbary Apes that live here—they are friendly and fun to watch.

We will pass through the beautiful city of Ifrane, which people often call “Little Switzerland” because of its clean, European style. We will have a short break here for coffee or just to look around. We continue the drive until we arrive in Fes in the late afternoon. Your driver will take you directly to your hotel or Riad, marking the end of your unforgettable desert trip.

Know Before You Go:

  • Layer your clothes. The days are hot, but the desert nights are very cold, so you need warm clothes.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water during the long drives and in the desert.
  • Bring comfortable shoes. You will do some walking in the canyons and in Ait Ben Haddou.
  • Protect yourself from the sun. Use a hat, sunglasses, and sun cream, especially during the camel ride.
  • Keep your camera ready. There are amazing views everywhere, and the light is beautiful for photos.
  • Be patient. The driving distances are long, but the views make the journey worthwhile.

Frequently Asked Questions:

The trip covers a long distance. You should expect to spend about 5 to 7 hours driving each day. The longest part is the last day from the desert to Fes, which is about 7 to 8 hours. But we make many nice stops for photos, walks, and rest.

For the camel ride, wear clothes that are comfortable and loose. Long pants are best to stop rubbing. In the desert, the daytime is hot, so bring light, breathable clothes. But the nights are very cold, so you must bring a warm jacket, a sweater, and good socks for sleeping. A scarf, hat, and sunglasses are also needed for sun and sand protection.

Yes, Morocco is a very safe country for tourists. Our drivers and guides are professional and know the routes very well. We make sure you are safe and comfortable for the whole trip.

In the luxury desert camps we use, there are usually electricity plugs for charging in the tents or in the public areas (like the restaurant tent). Please know that sometimes the electricity comes from solar panels and may be turned off late at night. Bringing a portable power bank is a good idea.

You do not need to take all your bags with you on the camel. We will take your main luggage to the desert camp by a 4×4 car. You just need to pack a small bag or backpack with what you need for the night, like a toothbrush, a warm layer, and your camera.

Yes, if you do not want to ride a camel, you can go to the desert camp by the 4×4 car instead. Just tell your driver or tell us when you book the tour.
