Hello travelers! Welcome to Morocco. Many people ask me this question every day: “Which desert should I visit?”
It is a very important question because Morocco has three main desert places, and they are very different. If you choose the wrong one, maybe you will be disappointed. But if you choose the right one, you will have the best time of your life.
We have Agafay Desert, which is a stone desert very close to Marrakech. Then we have Zagora Desert, which is a “gateway” desert with small dunes. And finally, we have Merzouga (Erg Chebbi), which is the real Sahara with big, orange sand dunes.
In this guide, I will explain everything to you. I will talk about distance from Marrakech, the scenery, the activities, and the price. I want to help you decide which trip is best for you, your family, or your partner.
Let’s start comparing these three beautiful places.

1: Agafay Desert
You find bellow all the informatio about Agafay Desert to have an idea about it:
What Is Agafay Desert?
Agafay is not a sand desert. Many people see photos and think it is sand, but it is actually a rocky desert. It looks like the moon. The ground is hard with stones and hills.
It is located very close to Marrakech, only 30 to 45 minutes by car. Because it is so close, it is very popular now. You do not need to drive for many hours. You can go there just for dinner and come back to your hotel in Marrakech the same night.
Pros of Visiting Agafay
- Very close to Marrakech: You don’t spend all day in the car. This is the biggest advantage.
- Amazing Luxury Camps: The camps here are very beautiful. Many have swimming pools with a view of the desert. It is perfect for Instagram photos.
- Good for Couples: It is very romantic. You can have a private dinner under the stars.
- Short Trip: You can do this in just one afternoon or one night.
Cons of Agafay
- No Sand Dunes: If you dream of walking in soft sand, Agafay is not for you. It is rocks.
- Not the “Real” Sahara: You don’t feel the deep silence of the big Sahara here. It feels more like a luxury resort area in nature.
- Can be hot: In summer, the rocks get very hot.
Who Should Choose Agafay?
- Travelers who have only 3 or 4 days in Marrakech.
- People who hate long car drives.
- Honeymooners who want a luxury tent with a pool.
- Families with small babies who cannot travel far.
My advice: If you want to see the sunset and have a nice dinner but sleep in your hotel in Marrakech, Agafay is perfect.
2: Zagora Desert
You find bellow all the informatio about Zagora Desert to have an idea about it:
What Is Zagora Desert?
Zagora is further away. It takes about 6 or 7 hours to drive from Marrakech. To go there, you must cross the High Atlas Mountains, which is a very beautiful drive.
Zagora is in the Draa Valley. This is a very big palm grove with millions of palm trees. The desert here is flat and rocky, but it has some areas with small sand dunes. The dunes are not big, maybe 10 or 20 meters high. We call it the “gateway to the Sahara.”
Pros of Zagora
- Good for 2 Days: You can leave Marrakech in the morning, sleep in Zagora, and come back the next day. It is the only option for a 2-day desert trip.
- Scenic Drive: The road to Zagora passes through Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley. The views are very nice.
- Affordable: Usually, tours to Zagora are cheaper than Merzouga or luxury Agafay.
- Camel Ride: You can still ride a camel here for 1 hour at sunset.
Cons of Zagora
- Small Dunes: The dunes (Tinfou Dunes) are small. You can see the other side easily. It does not feel like an endless ocean of sand.
- Still a Long Drive: 7 hours is a lot of driving for just one night. You spend more time in the car than in the camp.
- Less Impressive: If you have seen photos of big dunes, Zagora might look a bit simple to you.
Who Should Choose Zagora?
- Travelers who want to say “I slept in the desert” but only have 2 days.
- Budget travelers.
- People who want to see the Atlas Mountains and Ait Ben Haddou on the way.
3: Merzouga (Erg Chebbi Dunes)
You find bellow all the informatio about Merzouga Desert to have an idea about it:
What Is Merzouga?
This is it. This is the real Sahara Desert. Merzouga is famous for the Erg Chebbi dunes. These dunes are massive, orange, and very high (some are 150 meters high!).
It is far from Marrakech. The drive takes 9 to 10 hours without stops. But with stops for lunch and photos, it takes all day. Usually, we do this trip in 3 days and 2 nights so we can stop in the Dades Valley halfway.
Pros of Merzouga
- The Real Experience: When you are in the middle of the dunes, you see only sand and sky. It is quiet and magical.
- Best Sunset and Sunrise: Watching the sun come up over the big dunes is something you will never forget.
- Camel Trekking: Here you can ride camels for 1 hour or more into the deep dunes to reach your camp.
- Star Gazing: Because it is far from cities, the stars are very bright. You can see the Milky Way clearly.
Cons of Merzouga
- Very Long Drive: It is a long journey. You need minimum 3 days. 4 days is even better.
- Tiring: Sitting in the car for two days (to go and come back) can be tired for some people.
- More Expensive: Because the trip is 3 or 4 days, it costs more than a short trip.
Who Should Choose Merzouga?
- Travelers who want the once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- Photography lovers who want those perfect desert photos.
- Adventure seekers.
- Anyone who wants to see the true culture of the Berber nomads.
My advice: If you have time (3 days or more), please go to Merzouga. The drive is long, but the destination is worth it.

Marrakech to Zagora

- Road: You cross mountains, valleys, and canyons (Todra Gorges).
- Stops: We stop at Ait Ben Haddou, Roses Valley, Dades Valley, and Todra Gorges. It is a big road trip.
Price Comparison – Which Desert Is More Affordable?
Money is important, I know. Here is a rough idea of the costs.

- This is the budget option.

- Private tours are around €200 to €300 for the car and driver (total for the group).
3. Merzouga Desert (Best Value)
- It costs more total because it is 3 days, but the value is great.
- Shared 3-day tour: €100 to €150 per person.
- Private 3-day tour: €350 to €500 (depending on number of people and luxury level).
- Luxury camps in Merzouga are usually cheaper than Agafay, around €80 to €150 per night.
Which Desert Has the Best Dunes?
This is easy to answer:
- Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): The BIGGEST and best dunes. They are orange/gold color. They are soft and high. If you want to sandboard or climb high, go here.
- Zagora: Small dunes. They are maybe 10 meters high. They are nice, but not majestic.
- Agafay: ZERO dunes. It is stone and rock. Do not expect sand here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions people ask me on WhatsApp all the time.
Is Agafay a real desert? Technically yes, it is a desert because it is dry. But it is a “stone desert” (Reg), not a “sand desert” (Erg). It does not have the classic sand dunes.
Is Zagora part of the Sahara? Yes, Zagora is on the edge of the Sahara. But the big sand sea starts further south near M’hamid or Merzouga. Zagora gives you a small preview.
Which desert is best for a 2-day trip? Zagora is the only option for 2 days. Merzouga is too far for 2 days (you would spend 20 hours in the car). Agafay is good for 1 day.
Is Merzouga worth the long drive? Yes, absolutely. 100%. The drive passes through the Atlas Mountains, Berber villages, and canyons. It is beautiful. And when you arrive at the dunes, you forget the long drive.
Which desert is best for luxury camps? Agafay has the most modern, “glamping” style luxury camps with pools. Merzouga also has luxury camps, but they feel more traditional and authentic.
Can I see the stars in Agafay? Yes, you can see stars. But because it is close to Marrakech city lights, the sky is not as dark as Merzouga. In Merzouga, the sky is full of millions of stars.
