This daily itinerary gives you a clear look at how the 5 days journey unfolds, from leaving Fes to reaching the Sahara, exploring the desert region, passing through Morocco’s southern valleys, and crossing the High Atlas Mountains before ending in Marrakech.
DAY 1: FES ⇢ IFRANE ⇢ MIDLLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ ZIZ VALLEY ⇢ MERZOUGA
Pick up will be early from your hotel or riad in Fes for the journey south toward the Sahara. The route passes through Ifrane, the cedar forest near Azrou, and the Middle Atlas Mountains, with a lunch stop around Midelt.
In the afternoon, the scenery changes from mountain landscapes to dry valleys and palm oases. You pass the Ziz Valley, one of the main gateways to the Sahara, before arriving in Merzouga near the Erg Chebbi dunes.
From Merzouga, you ride a camel into the desert and stop to watch the sunset over the dunes. The day ends at your desert camp with dinner, Berber music, and a night under the stars.
DAY 2: DISCOVERY DAY IN MERZOUGA
Today is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert region beyond the dunes. After sunrise and breakfast, you meet your driver and start a 4×4 tour through the desert tracks around Erg Chebbi.
The day includes a visit to Khamlia village, known for its Gnawa music and West African heritage, followed by a stop with local nomadic families to share tea and learn about their way of life. In the afternoon, you have free time to relax, try sandboarding, or choose an optional quad bike activity.
Overnight stay will be in a comfortable hotel or riad in Merzouga, close to the dunes.
DAY 3: MERZOUGA ⇢ RISSANI ⇢ TODRA GORGE ⇢ DADES VALLEY
After breakfast, you leave Merzouga and begin the journey toward Dades Valley. The first stop is Rissani, a historic trading town known for its traditional market, especially active on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
The route continues through palm oases and small villages before reaching Tinghir and the Todra Gorge. You will have time to walk inside the canyon, where high rock walls and the river create one of the most impressive natural stops in southern Morocco.
In the afternoon, you continue to Dades Valley, known for its dramatic landscapes, winding roads, and “monkey fingers” rock formations. Dinner and overnight stay will be in a local hotel or riad in the valley.
Day 4: Dades Valley to Ouarzazate via Bou Tharar, Rose Valley and Skoura
Today you leave Dades Valley and follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, a scenic route known for old earthen villages, palm groves, and southern Moroccan landscapes.
The journey can include an off-road section near Bou Tharar, with views of remote valleys and traditional mountain life. You then continue to Kelaat M’Gouna, the Rose Valley, famous for its rose products and annual rose festival.
In the afternoon, you travel through Skoura oasis and visit Amridil Kasbah, one of the best-preserved kasbahs in Morocco. The day ends in Ouarzazate, known for its film studios and desert architecture, where you spend the night.
DAY 5: OUARZAZATE ⇢ AIT BEN HADDOU ⇢ HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ TELOUET KASBAH ⇢ MARRAKECH
On the final day, you visit Ait Benhaddou, Morocco’s most famous fortified village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will have time to walk through its old earthen streets, see the traditional architecture, and enjoy the views before continuing into the High Atlas Mountains.
The route then passes through Telouet, where you can visit the historic Telouet Kasbah, once linked to the powerful Glaoui family. Its ruined exterior and decorated inner rooms make it one of the most interesting kasbahs on the mountain road.
In the afternoon, you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with panoramic views of valleys, mountain villages, and winding roads. Arrival in Marrakech is planned for the afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or riad.
