Fes To Marrakech Desert Tour 2 Days Overview:

This 2 days Fes to Marrakech desert tour is a quick way to see the beautiful Sahara desert and many different parts of Morocco. It is perfect if your time is short but you still want the desert magic. We start early from Fes and we travel through the amazing Middle Atlas Mountains and also the cedar forest where you can see some funny monkeys. The road goes through many simple Berber towns, and the beautiful Ziz Valley, a big oasis of green palm trees.

The biggest highlight of this quick trip is the Merzouga Sahara desert. Here you will ride a camel in the late afternoon. You will see a wonderful sunset over the high, golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. You will sleep one night in a nice desert camp under many stars and enjoy a traditional dinner and music. This is a very special experience.

The next day, we leave the desert and drive a very long way to Marrakech. The Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour 2 Days route takes us through Ait Benhaddou, a famous old Kasbah that many movies use. Then we go over the High Atlas Mountains. This second day is a long journey but it has the most beautiful views of all the tour. We arrive to Marrakech in the evening.

DAY 1: FES ⇢ IFRANE ⇢ MIDLLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ ZIZ VALLEY ⇢ MERZOUGA

We will pick you up early from your hotel or Riad in Fes. We start the long drive south and we go through the green Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop will be the town of Ifrane. It looks like a city in Europe, with its clean streets and houses with sloped roofs. This is why people call it the “Switzerland of Morocco,” it is a nice place for a quick stop and picture.

Next, we drive to the famous Cedar Forest near Azrou. This is a very beautiful place with tall cedar trees. Here, you can meet the wild Barbary Macaques, a type of monkey. You can take photos and watch them play in the trees. We drive on, passing Midelt where we will stop to eat lunch. This area is known for its apples and nice weather.

In the afternoon, the landscape changes a lot, this is very exciting to see. We drive along the Ziz Valley, which is a huge green area of palm trees stretching far away, it is a big green river of plants in the dry mountains. We finally arrive in Merzouga, the door to the great Erg Chebbi desert. Here, your camel is waiting for you. You ride the camel across the golden sand dunes to your desert camp. You watch the sun go down over the huge dunes, it is very beautiful. When you get to the camp, you will have a traditional dinner and enjoy Berber music around the fire before sleeping in your tent.

DAY 2: MERZOUGA DESERT ⇢ AIT BEN HADDOU ⇢ HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ MARRAKECH

It is a good idea to wake up early today, before the sun comes up. You can climb a dune near the camp to watch the sun rise, the colors are amazing. After breakfast, we take the camels or a 4×4 car back to Merzouga town where your driver is waiting. This is the start of the longest drive of the whole trip so we must start early.

We drive towards Marrakech, but we stop for sure at the best places. We will pass through Rissani, an important old market town. The drive takes us through the Draa Valley area, which is full of old Kasbahs and palm groves. We pass Ouarzazate, which is called the “Hollywood of Africa” because of the film studios there. Our most important stop will be Ait Benhaddou. This old fortified village is protected by UNESCO and it looks very impressive. You will stop here to walk around and take some good pictures of this historical site.

The last part of the journey is crossing the High Atlas Mountains. We drive up the Tizi n’Tichka pass. The road is winding and the views are spectacular, you see many Berber villages built high on the mountainside. We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening and the driver will drop you at your accommodation. The trip is long but it is worth it for all the things you see.

Tips To Get Ready For Your Adventure

  • Tell us about your diet: If you have any food allergies, like nuts or milk, or if you are a vegetarian, please tell us when you book. We want to make sure the food you eat at the camp and for dinner is safe and good for you.
  • The drive is long: The drive on both days is very long, especially Day 2. We stop many times for breaks and photos, but be ready for long hours in the car. This is the fastest way to do the trip and see the desert.
  • Money in rural areas: It is good to have some cash, Moroccan Dirhams, for things like lunch, small shops, or for the bathroom stops. In the smaller towns we pass, they often do not take credit cards.
  • What to wear for the weather: The weather changes a lot on this trip. It can be cold in the Middle Atlas Mountains and hot in the desert during the day. At night in the desert, it can be very cold, even in summer. Bring layers so you can add or remove clothes easily.
  • Luggage for the camel: You should bring a small bag, like a backpack, for your camera and things you need for the night. Your big suitcases will travel by car to the camp or stay safely with the driver. You do not need the big bag for the camel ride, it is better to take small things.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Yes it is safe. Our camels are friendly and the guides walk with them to help you. If you really do not want to ride a camel, we can take you to the camp in the 4×4 car instead, just tell us.

We offer two types of tents. The standard camp has simple, comfortable tents with shared bathrooms. The luxury camp has big private tents with a bathroom and hot shower inside your tent. You can choose the one you like best.

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best times. The desert is very hot in the summer and the mountains can be very cold in the winter. We can travel all year, but these months are the most comfortable for the long drives and the desert camp.

We stop at simple, clean restaurants in towns like Midelt on Day 1, and somewhere along the road on Day 2. Your driver knows the reliable places. Lunch is not included, so you pay for your own food there.

Yes, of course. Your tour is private, and your driver is happy to stop for photos at any safe and good place. Just tell him, “Please stop here for a picture.”

The internet is usually not very strong or sometimes not working at all in the deep desert camp. It is better to use this time to enjoy the quiet and the stars. You can usually get phone signal in Merzouga town before the camel ride.
