DAY 1: CASABLANCA ⇢ RABAT ⇢ FES

The first day begins when we pick you up from your hotel in Casablanca or from the airport. Casablanca is the business city of Morocco. Our first big visit is the famous Hassan II Mosque. It is a truly huge and very beautiful building that stands by the ocean. It is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture, you must see it before we drive away.

After seeing the mosque, we drive to Rabat, the capital city. Rabat is much more calm than Casablanca. We will visit the Royal Palace from the outside and see the Hassan Tower. This tower is a very old minaret with many columns around it. We will also visit the Kasbah of the Udayas. It is a historical place with blue and white small streets, nice for walking and taking pictures.

In the afternoon, we continue our journey to Fes, which is one of the four imperial cities and the cultural heart of Morocco. It is a long drive, but we will make stops so you can rest. When we arrive in Fes, we take you to your Riad (a traditional Moroccan house). You will have dinner and spend the night here to rest well for the next exciting day.

DAY 2: FES ⇢ IFRANE ⇢ MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ ZIZ VALLEY ⇢ MERZOUGA DESERT

Today is the day we go to the big desert! We leave Fes after a nice breakfast. We will drive through the high Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop in the mountain is Ifrane. People call it the “Switzerland of Morocco” because the houses look like they are in Europe, not Africa. It is a nice stop for coffee.

Next, we drive to the Cedar Forest, near Azrou. This place has beautiful tall trees, and if we are lucky, we will see the wild Barbary Monkeys! They are very funny. We stop here to take some nice photos with the trees and the monkeys. Then we continue to Midelt for lunch. The landscape starts to change here, becoming more dry and rocky as we drive south.

In the afternoon, we go through the Ziz Valley. This valley is amazing because it has millions of palm trees, it looks like a long green river in the dry land. We arrive at Merzouga, the door to the Sahara Desert. Our driver will meet the camels. You will ride your camel for about 1 to 1.5 hours across the Erg Chebbi dunes. You will watch a fantastic sunset over the orange sands. We stay the night in a nice Berber camp, eat dinner, listen to music around the fire, and sleep under so many stars!

DAY 3: MERZOUGA DESERT ⇢ RISSANI ⇢ TODRA CANYON ⇢ DADES GORGE

It is good to wake up early today to see the sunrise in the desert. It is a wonderful view as the sun makes the sand shine gold. After a good breakfast at the camp, you can choose to ride the camel back or take a 4×4 car back to the town of Merzouga. We then drive to Rissani. This town is very important because it has a big, traditional market, called a Souk, that is very famous in this area. If it is a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), we will stop to walk around and see local life.

Next, we drive toward the Todra Gorge. This is a spectacular natural place. The mountains here split, and you can walk between very tall rock walls, up to 300 meters high. It is a nice, cool place for a walk and taking powerful pictures. This area is also popular for rock climbers from all over the world.

In the afternoon, we continue the drive to the Dades Gorge. We will pass through the Dades Valley, which is famous for its beautiful rock formations and small old Kasbahs. We arrive at the Dades Gorges area in the evening. We check in to our comfortable hotel or Riad here, where you will have dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 4: DADES GORGES ⇢ OUARZAZATE ⇢ AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH ⇢ HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ MARRAKECH

After breakfast, we start the last big day of driving. We go along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. We pass through Kelaat M’Gouna, which is known for its rose products, especially during the Rose Festival in May. We then go to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa.” It is famous because many big movies were filmed here, and we can stop to see the movie studios if you want.

Our main visit today is the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. This Ksar (fortified village) is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is a very beautiful example of old earthen architecture. It has been used in movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. We spend time here walking through the old buildings and learning about the history. This is one of the top sights on the tour.

Finally, we drive up the very High Atlas Mountains. We cross the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which is very high, about 2,260 meters. The views from the top are truly stunning, with Berber villages built on the mountainsides. We will stop for photos and maybe a tea. We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening. Our driver will drop you off at your hotel or Riad, and we say goodbye after a fantastic trip.

Know Before You Go:

We want your trip to be smooth and easy. Here are some simple pieces of advice for you during the tour:

  • Food Requests: If someone in your group has an allergy, or if you are vegetarian or vegan, please tell us when you book the tour. This way, we can make sure the restaurants and accommodations prepare the right food for you.
  • Driving Comfort: Be ready for some long driving days, especially Day 2. We use comfortable, modern cars and your driver is a safe driver, but the roads in the mountains take time. Remember to bring a book or some music for the road.
  • Desert Temperature: The desert can be very hot when the sun is out, but when night comes, it gets very cold. Please bring layers of clothing—a light shirt for the day and a warm jacket for the evening in the desert camp.
  • Small Money: It is useful to have some Moroccan Dirhams (small notes and coins) with you. It is better for buying small things like water bottles or snacks at small stops along the road.
  • Taking Photos: Moroccan people are often friendly, but always ask permission before you take a photo of a person, especially women or children. It is the most respectful way to do it.
