DAY 1: CASABLANCA ⇢ RABAT
We will meet you at the airport in Casablanca, or at your hotel. Our trip starts in Casablanca, a big, modern city. The first thing we will visit is the Hassan II Mosque. It is the largest mosque in Africa and stands next to the Atlantic Ocean. You will see its very tall minaret. We will spend some time here, where you can see the beautiful traditional art and the amazing design of the building. This visit is important to start your journey into Moroccan history and architecture.
After the visit to the mosque, we will drive to Rabat, which is not so far. Rabat is the official capital of Morocco and it is much quieter and cleaner than Casablanca. When we arrive in Rabat, we will check in to your accommodation and then go for a short tour. We will see the Royal Palace from the outside only, where the King lives. We will also visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, which is a very important historical monument.
In the late afternoon, we will go to the Kasbah of the Udayas. This is a very old place, like a small town with blue and white painted walls, looking over the ocean. It is very beautiful for walking and taking pictures. You can drink a nice Moroccan mint tea here. Then we go back to your hotel in Rabat for the first night. This first day is easy and a good start to get used to the Moroccan way of life. We hope you like it.
DAY 2: RABAT ⇢ CHEFCHAOUEN
We will eat our breakfast in Rabat and then start our drive to the famous blue town, Chefchaouen. This drive will take us through the green fields and maybe some small villages in the Rif Mountains. The scenery will change from the flat coast to the mountains, and you will see the landscape is very beautiful. We will stop sometimes so you can stretch your legs and take photos of the nature.
When we arrive in Chefchaouen, we will check in to your riad or hotel. Chefchaouen is special because almost all the houses, walls, doors, and paths are painted in different shades of blue color. It feels very peaceful and relaxing to walk there. You can spend the afternoon walking slowly in the small streets of the Medina. It is a perfect place to buy some small souvenirs or just sit in the main square, Uta el Hammam, and watch the people.
The town is much calmer than the big cities, and it is a good break before we go to Fes. You can have dinner at one of the rooftop restaurants to see the view of the blue town from above, which is very beautiful at sunset time. We will stay here for the night. Remember to wear comfortable shoes because you will walk up and down many small paths.
DAY 3: CHEFCHAOUEN ⇢ VOLUBILIS ⇢ MEKNES ⇢ FES
After breakfast in the blue city, we will start our drive to the south, towards Fes. This day is full of history and different stops. Our first stop will be Volubilis, the old Roman ruins. Volubilis was a very big city a long, long time ago. You can see the old columns, the big floor mosaics, and understand how the Romans lived here. It is an important stop for history lovers. We will have a local guide to help you understand the history better.
Next, we drive a short time to Meknes, which is another Imperial City. We will see the Bab Mansour gate, which is very big and beautifully decorated. It is one of the biggest gates in all of Morocco. We will also see the Sahrij Souani basin, which was used for water storage. Meknes is famous for its powerful history under Sultan Moulay Ismail. We will have some lunch here before continuing our road trip to Fes, the final stop of the day.
We will arrive in Fes in the afternoon. Fes is the oldest Imperial City and the cultural heart of Morocco. When we arrive, we will take you to your Riad, which is usually in the old Medina area. The Riad will be very comfortable, a nice traditional house. You will have dinner and rest for the night, because tomorrow is a big day for exploring the Medina of Fes with a guide. It is good to have a good rest.
DAY 4: FULL GUIDED DAY TRIP IN FES
Today is only for Fes, a special city. After you eat breakfast, a local professional guide will meet you at your Riad. This guide knows Fes Medina very well, like the back of his hand. Fes el Bali, the old Medina, is like a big maze with more than 9,000 small streets. The guide will help you not get lost and will show you the most important and hidden places.
We will visit the Royal Palace gate (Bab Bou Jeloud), the beautiful Al-Qarawiyyin University and Mosque (from outside), and the famous Chouara Tannery. The tannery is where they make the leather, and the smell is very strong, but it is an important and interesting traditional activity to see. The guide will also take you to see the traditional artisans making pottery and carpets. You will see how they work and keep the old traditions alive.
We will also visit the Jewish Quarter (Mellah) and a ceramic factory to see the famous blue Fes pottery. This full day tour is important to understand the deep history and the crafts of Morocco. Your guide will tell you many stories about the history and the culture. After a busy day, your guide will take you back to your Riad in Fes for another nice dinner and a quiet night.
DAY 5: FES ⇢ IFRANE ⇢ MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ ZIZ VALLEY ⇢ MERZOUGA DESERT
This is a big and exciting day, the day we go to the Sahara desert! We start early after breakfast. We will drive through the middle Atlas Mountains, which is a big and important mountain range. First, we stop in Ifrane, a clean town that looks like a small European mountain village, people call it “Moroccan Switzerland.” The scenery is very different here. Then, we drive into the cedar forest, where you can see the Atlas Monkeys playing. We will stop for a short time to take pictures of these wild animals.
We will drive through Midelt town for lunch. The trip continues over the Tizi n’Tichka pass in the mountains and the landscape changes to dry, rocky plains. The most beautiful part comes when we see the Ziz Valley, a very long river of palm trees that looks like a green snake on the yellow land. It is a stunning view, perfect for photos. We are now getting closer to the desert.
In the late afternoon, we finally arrive in Merzouga. This is where the big sand dunes of Erg Chebbi begin. Here, you will find your camels waiting. You will ride the camel slowly into the sand dunes while the sun is setting, making the sand look gold and orange. The camel ride takes about one hour to reach the desert camp. When you get to the camp, you will have dinner, listen to traditional music around the fire, and sleep in your comfortable tent under the clear sky, with many stars. It is a magical experience you will not forget.
DAY 6: MERZOUGA DESERT ⇢ RISSANI ⇢ TODRA GORGE ⇢ DADES GORGE
It is good to wake up early to see the beautiful sunrise over the desert dunes. The sun rises up and colors the sand slowly, it is very peaceful. After watching the sunrise and eating a good desert breakfast, you will ride your camel back to Merzouga village. Our driver will be waiting there for you. We will start the next part of our adventure.
Our first stop is Rissani, a historical town and the first capital of the Alaouite dynasty. It is famous for its traditional market (souk), which is a very local experience. We will walk in the souk if it is a market day. Then we drive to the spectacular Todra Gorge, near the town of Tinghir. The Todra river has cut a very high and deep canyon through the rocks. The cliffs are very tall, over 300 meters high. You can walk along the river here and see the amazing nature.
After Todra, we drive on to the Dades Gorge, passing through the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” You will see many old mud-brick forts along the road. We will arrive in Dades Gorge in the late afternoon. The Dades Valley is known for its interesting rock formations, which look like monkey fingers. We will have dinner and spend the night in a hotel or guesthouse that is located in the beautiful Dades Gorge area.
DAY 7: DADES GORGE ⇢ OUARZAZATE ⇢ AIT BEN HADDOU ⇢ HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ MARRAKECH
After breakfast in Dades Gorge, we start our last day of the tour. We will drive through the Dades Valley, enjoying the views. We pass through Kalaat M’Gouna, which is known as the Valley of the Roses, where they make rose products. Then, we arrive in Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate is called the “Hollywood of Africa” because many famous international movies are filmed here. We can stop to see the movie studios from outside or just drive through.
Next, we go to Ait Benhaddou, a very famous fortified village (Ksar) and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This old village is made of mud and straw and is very beautiful. We will walk around this old, interesting place and you can climb to the top for a great view of the area. It is one of the most famous places in Morocco. We will have lunch near here before starting the final big drive.
The last part of the trip is crossing the High Atlas Mountains. We will drive over the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, which is 2,260 meters high. Know Before You Go:
- About the Food: If you or anyone in your group has a problem with food, like an allergy (maybe peanuts or gluten), please tell us when you book the tour. We will tell all the hotels and restaurants so they can prepare safe and nice meals for you. Your safety is most important to us on this trip.
- Money and Cash: In the big cities, you can use credit cards for some big payments like hotels and big restaurants. But when we travel in the small towns and in the desert area, sometimes only cash is possible. It is a good idea to always have some Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) cash for small purchases, like water, tips, or souvenirs from local sellers.
- Respectful Clothes: Morocco is a Muslim country, and while people are very open, it is better to dress respectfully. When we visit the mosques or the very old parts of the Medina, it is good for both men and women to cover shoulders and knees. This is a sign of respect and will make your local interactions better. You do not have to, but it is better.
- Taking Pictures of People: The streets in the old Medinas are great for photos. But when you want to take a picture of a local person, especially women or street vendors, please remember to ask their permission first. A simple smile and a “Puis-je prendre une photo?” (Can I take a photo?) is good. If they say no, please respect their answer and do not take the picture.
- Weather in the Desert: The Merzouga desert area has very different weather in the year. In the summer (June, July, August), it is very hot during the day. In the winter (December, January), the days are nice but the nights are very cold, you need warm clothes for sleeping in the desert camp. We will tell you exactly what clothes you need for the month you travel.
- Learning a Few Words: Moroccan people love it when visitors try to speak their language, which is Arabic or Berber. It is very easy to learn a few words like “Salaam Alaikum” (hello), “Shukran” (thank you), and “La” (no) and “Na’am” (yes). Trying to speak a little will make the locals very happy and you will have a better connection.
