DAY 1: CASABLANCA ⇢ RABAT ⇢ CHEFCHAOUEN

We will meet you at the airport in Casablanca or at your hotel. Our first stop is to see the famous Hassan II Mosque. It is the biggest mosque in Morocco and it is built partly over the ocean. It is very beautiful architecture. We do not stay long in Casablanca, then we drive to Rabat, the current capital city.

In Rabat, we visit two important places. The first one is the Hassan Tower, which is an old minaret that was never finished, but it is still impressive. Next to it, there is the tomb of Moroccan kings. After that, we go to the Kasbah of the Udayas. This part is very charming with white and blue walls, it is nice to walk around and see the view of the river.

After we have lunch in Rabat, we will take a long drive to the north, heading to Chefchaouen. This drive is very scenic and we will arrive in the late afternoon. You will check into your Riad, which is the hotel inside the old town. You can rest and get ready for the blue streets exploration tomorrow. This is a day with much driving.

DAY 2: CHEFCHAOUEN ⇢ FES

Today is your day to enjoy the amazing blue city of Chefchaouen. After breakfast, you can start walking in the old Medina. All the houses and walls are painted in many shades of blue and white, which makes it feel like a dream. Many people come here to take beautiful photos, you will want to take many too.

Take your time walking slowly in the small, narrow streets. It is not a very big town, but you can get lost easily, and this is fun. There are many small shops and markets where you can buy special handicrafts from this region, especially the colorful blankets and wool clothes. You can sit in the main square, called Outa El Hammam, to drink some mint tea and see people go by.

After we have lunch in Chefchaouen, we will leave the mountains and drive to Fes. It is about a four-hour drive, not too long. Fes is a very different city, it is much bigger and older. When we arrive, we will take you to your Riad in the old Medina. You can have dinner and prepare for the guided tour you will have the next day.

DAY 3: A FULL GUIDED DAY TOUR IN FES

Today you will meet a local guide who knows Fes very well. You really need a guide here because the Fes Medina is the largest car-free zone in the world, it is like a maze with thousands of small streets. First, we will see the Royal Palace golden gates, they are very nice for a quick picture.

The guide will take you inside the Medina (Fes El Bali) to see the history. You will see the Chouara Tannery, where they still make leather using old, old methods. It smells a bit, but it is very interesting to see the process. You will also visit Al-Qarawiyyin University, which is the oldest continuously working university in the world, and some beautiful old schools (Medersas) like Al-Attarine.

We also visit the Jewish Quarter, called the Mellah, which has a different style of architecture with nice balconies. The day finishes with a panoramic view of the whole Medina from an old fortress on a hill. From up there, you can really see how big and amazing the city of Fes is. The guide will bring you back to your Riad when the tour is finished.

DAY 4: FES ⇢ IFRANE ⇢ MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ ZIZ VALLEY ⇢ MERZOUGA DESERT

Today is the long day, but it is full of beautiful views! We start early after breakfast and drive south to the desert. The first stop is Ifrane, a small town that looks like it is in Switzerland, not Morocco, because of the nice clean architecture and the cold weather in winter.

Next, we drive through the Middle Atlas Mountains. We stop in the cedar forest, where you can walk a little and maybe see the wild Barbary apes. They are very funny animals and sometimes they come close to people. Then we continue to Midelt for lunch before crossing the Tizi n’Talghomt pass and going down towards the desert.

The landscape changes a lot. You will see the Ziz Valley, which is a big, green oasis with many palm trees. It looks very surprising to see so much green next to the dry mountains. We continue driving until we reach Merzouga. Here, your camel is waiting. You ride the camel for about one hour and half into the Erg Chebbi dunes to see the most amazing sunset you can imagine. You will have dinner and sleep in a nice camp tonight.

DAY 5: MERZOUGA DESERT ⇢ RISSANI ⇢ TODRA GORGE ⇢ DADES GORGE

It is a good idea to wake up early this morning to watch the sunrise over the dunes, it is very beautiful and quiet. After breakfast at the camp, you can ride the camel back or we can take the 4×4 car to Merzouga town. Then we start the journey towards the Dades Gorges.

The first interesting stop is Rissani, which is known for its traditional market (souk). If we are lucky and it is a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday), we can stop to see the local people selling all kinds of things, it is very lively and authentic. Then we drive to the spectacular Todra Gorge.

The Todra Gorge is a very big canyon with high walls of rock, sometimes they are only a few meters apart. You can walk inside the gorge, it feels very small standing between the giant rocks. After lunch, we drive through the Dades Valley, which is famous for its unique rock formations called “monkey fingers”. We will arrive at your hotel in Dades Gorge in the evening for dinner and resting.

DAY 6: DADES GORGE ⇢ OUARZAZATE ⇢ AIT BEN HADDOU ⇢ HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ MARRAKECH

This is the final day of the tour, and it is full of important sights. We drive through the Valley of Roses and stop in Ouarzazate, which is called the “Hollywood of Africa” because many movies are filmed here. If you want, we can visit one of the big movie studios (Atlas Studios).

The most important stop today is the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou. This old fortified village is protected by UNESCO and it is a wonderful place to explore. It looks like a giant sandcastle, and it was used in movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. We will walk around the mud-brick buildings and learn about its history.

After lunch near Ait Benhaddou, we begin the final drive over the High Atlas Mountains. We cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which is very high up, about 2,260 meters. There are many great spots to stop for panoramic pictures of the mountains. We will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening, and our driver will take you to your hotel or Riad, saying goodbye to you.

Know Before You Go:

  • Tell us about your food: If you cannot eat certain foods because of allergies or if you are vegetarian or vegan, please tell us when you book the tour. We want to make sure your meals are correct and delicious, especially in the desert camp.
  • About the Camels: The camel ride is a wonderful experience, but if you do not want to ride the camel to the camp, that is okay. We can easily arrange for a comfortable 4×4 car to take you to the desert camp instead. Just tell your driver.
  • Money and Spending: In the big cities and many shops, you can use your credit card, but in small villages and for tips or buying water, you will need cash (Moroccan Dirhams). Make sure to always have some small cash with you.
  • Clothing for Morocco: Morocco is mostly conservative, so we suggest packing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, especially when we visit the mosques or old Medinas. It is polite and keeps you comfortable in the sun. Also, bring comfortable shoes, you will walk a lot!
  • Be ready for sun and cold: The desert is very hot in the day, but it can get very cold at night, especially in winter. You should bring light clothes for the day and a warm jacket and long pants for the night and for the mountains.
  • Optional activities: In the desert, if you want more adventure, you can choose to do extra things like quad biking on the dunes. This is not included in the price but your driver can help you book it easily with a local agency.

We use very comfortable, modern, private vehicles. Usually, it is a 4×4 SUV like a Toyota Land Cruiser for smaller groups, or a clean, comfortable minivan for larger groups. All cars have good air conditioning and are safe.

It is always better to book your trip as soon as you know your dates. This is very important for us to make sure we can get the best accommodation for you, especially if you are traveling during busy holidays like Easter or Christmas.

To make your booking definite, we ask for a small deposit first. You can pay this deposit using PayPal or a bank transfer. You can pay the rest of the money in cash to your driver when the tour starts on the first day. You can pay in Euros, US Dollars, or Moroccan Dirhams.

In the cities like Fes and Chefchaouen, there is quite a lot of walking, especially in the old Medinas where cars cannot go. But most of the time, the transport is right there for you. The desert camel ride is not hard, and you can walk for a little time in the gorges if you like.

November is a good month for this journey. The weather in the cities (Casablanca, Fes, Marrakech) is mild, not too hot. In the High Atlas Mountains, it will be cold, so bring layers. In the desert, the days are still warm but the nights can be quite cold, so bring warm things for sleeping.
