DAY 1: MARRAKECH ⇢ HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS ⇢ AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH ⇢ DADES VALLEY

We start our 6 Days Desert Tour Marrakech To Fes early in the morning from Marrakech. We will pick you up from your hotel or Riad. The adventure begins quickly as we go towards the High Atlas Mountains. We drive up to the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which is 2,260 meters high. It is a fantastic view, so remember to take your camera. We stop for photos and a nice Moroccan mint tea.

After we cross the mountains, we arrive at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou. This ancient, fortified village is very impressive, made of mud bricks and it has a long history. We will take time to walk through the small paths inside. Many big international movies used this Kasbah as a background. After visiting Ait Ben Haddou, we continue our drive through Ouarzazate, which is known as the “Hollywood of Africa”, then through the Valley of Roses, which smells lovely in spring. We finally arrive in the Dades Valley, where you will spend the night in a nice traditional hotel.

DAY 2: DADES VALLEY ⇢ TODRA GORGE ⇢ MERZOUGA DESERT

After a good breakfast in your hotel in Dades Valley, we start the day by exploring the Dades Gorges, it is beautiful and the rocks are amazing. Then, we drive to the nearby Todra Gorge. Here, the rock walls are very high and very close together, it feels like they touch the sky. You can walk along the river inside the gorge and enjoy the peaceful nature. This place is a popular spot for people who love rock climbing.

We continue our journey toward the Sahara desert. We pass through many Berber villages and towns like Erfoud, which is famous for its fossils. As we get closer to the desert, the landscape changes to sandy, drier land. We arrive in Merzouga, which is right next to the high, orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. Here, your camels are waiting for you, they are ready. You will ride the camel into the dunes to see a truly beautiful sunset. We spend the night in a desert camp, where you will have a nice dinner and listen to traditional music around a campfire.

DAY 3: A FULL DAY IN THE DESERT EXPLORING THE AREA

This day is fully for you to explore the Merzouga desert area, so you can relax and do things you like. If you wake up early, you will see a sunrise over the sand dunes that is truly amazing, it is worth it to wake up early. After breakfast at the camp, you will meet your driver again. We will drive around the dunes, which is called the Dakar Rally route.

We will visit some interesting places, like the nomadic families who live in simple tents in the desert. We stop to have tea with them and see how they live simply. We also visit the village of Khamlia, which is known for its Gnaoua music, they play very rhythmic and spiritual music. After a local lunch, you can try sandboarding, or just relax at your camp or hotel. It is a calm and nice day in the heart of the Sahara.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA ⇢ ERFOUD ⇢ MIDELT ⇢ CEDAR FOREST ⇢ FES

We say goodbye to the desert today, after a final breakfast. Our long drive north to Fes starts now, this is a longer drive but it has many interesting stops. We pass through the Ziz Valley, where you can see a large green oasis of palm trees stretching far. It is a great contrast to the desert sand we just left, it is so green.

We continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains. We stop in Midelt, a nice town, for lunch. Then, we drive to the famous cedar forest near the town of Ifrane. This forest is home to the Barbary Macaques, a type of monkey. We stop here so you can see them and take photos, but please be careful with your food. Ifrane is often called “Little Switzerland” because its houses have a different, European style, which is funny to see in Morocco. We arrive in Fes in the early evening.

DAY 5: GUIDED TRIP SIGHTSEEING IN FES

Today you will spend the whole day discovering Fes, which is Morocco’s oldest Imperial city. After breakfast, you will meet your city guide. We start by seeing the outside of the Royal Palace with its beautiful golden gates. Then, we go up to the Borj Sud fortress to get a wonderful, panoramic view of the whole Medina, it is a very big old city.

We spend most of the day walking inside the Fes el Bali (the Old Medina). It is like a maze, full of narrow alleys, so many people and donkeys are working there. We visit historical religious schools like the Attarine Madrasa and the famous Chouara Tannery, where they dye leather in big colorful pits, it smells a little bit strange there but it is very interesting to watch. We finish our trip near the famous Blue Gate, which is called Bab Boujeloud. You have free time to walk or shop afterwards.

Know Before You Go:

  • Tell Us About Allergies: If you or someone in your group has a food allergy or needs special food, please tell us when you book the tour. This way, we can tell the hotels and the desert camp, so they can make safe meals for you.
  • Layer Your Clothes: The weather can change a lot in Morocco. During the day it can be hot, especially in the desert, but the nights and mornings, especially in the Atlas Mountains and the desert, can be very cold. So, bring clothes that you can easily put on and take off.
  • Cash is Important: While you can use cards in big cities, many small places, shops, and roadside restaurants only accept cash (Moroccan Dirham). It is always good to have some small money with you for water or small gifts.
  • The Travel Time is Long: This is a long trip across mountains and desert roads. Day 1 and Day 4 especially have many hours of driving. We make nice stops to break up the journey, but please be ready for a long time in the car. It is a comfortable car, but still long.
  • Sun Protection: The Moroccan sun is strong, very strong. Always wear a hat, sunglasses, and good sun cream. This is true even in winter, especially when you are in the desert or high in the Atlas Mountains.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Yes, sure, of course. This is your private tour, and your driver knows the best spots to stop. Just tell him when you see something you like, and he will stop when it is safe to do so.

Yes, the camel ride is safe for everyone. The camels are well-trained, and the guides walk with you the whole time. If someone does not feel comfortable on the camel, we can also arrange a 4×4 car to take you to the camp.

Even if it is hot during the day, the desert gets cold at night, especially from October to March. Bring a warm jacket, maybe a light scarf, and closed shoes to wear at the camp.

You will eat traditional Moroccan food, mostly Tajine and Couscous, which is very tasty. The food served in the desert camps and hotels is generally very good and filling.

We cannot give you the exact total because prices can change. But usually, the fees for sites like Ait Ben Haddou or film studios are small, maybe between 2 to 7 Euros per person for each place. It is not too much, but it is better to have cash.

Yes, we can easily do this tour in the opposite direction. The itinerary and all the things you see will be the same, just the start and end points will change. Just tell us when you book.
